“I was born at Harare hospital and grew up in Mufakose, Harare. When my father left Malawi for Zimbabwe, he got an ID through his uncle - his mother’s brother who was using the surname Asima, However, our actual family name is Chemukwanda. My father came from Malawi when he was a young man by following the rail and on foot. My father said that where he came from was undeveloped, which motivated them to travel to Salisbury to look for jobs as others had told them they could get jobs there. Their parents later followed them. My father never went back to Malawi. He had obtained a passport and wanted to travel back home and vist, but unfortunately he died before he could use his passport. We buried him here in Zimbabwe. My first visit to Malawi was in February 2026. Growing up we were told that there was a lot of witchcraft in Malawi but when I got there, I realised that there are normal people like us. To others who have the same mixed parentage I can say it is important to know your roots so you can tell your grandchildren about your origins. Be proud of where you come from.”
