“My parents met in Malawi when my mother was at school. My father followed my mother to Zimbabwe in 1980. When my father moved to Zimbabwe, he was made to renounce his Malawian citizenship and take up the Zimbabwean one. He became Zimbabwean in theory. I was born and grew up in Harare and I know a little bit about my family back in Malawi. My grandparents are late, but I knew about them. My father had a sibling and some other relatives in Malawi. At one point we went to Malawi and I met relatives from my father’s side. I had such a good experience then so I embrace that part of being Malawian. Because I grew up in Zimbabwe, I identify as Zimbabwean. However, It is just good saying that I’m both Malawian and Zimbabwean. Accept that you are from Malawi originally, even though you are Zimbabwean. You can be proud of both because there is nothing that says that you have to be strictly one.”
